Is PRP Hair Loss Treatment Right for Me?

Having a full head of hair is important to us. We tend to think of strong and thick hair as being attractive, in both men and women. Yet, thinning hair is something that lots of people suffer from over their life. For a lot of people, this can have a negative effect on their confidence and self-perception.

Hair loss or hair thinning does not have to be permanent. While there are a range of surgical and non-surgical approaches you can take, PRP Hair Loss Treatment is one of the most effective treatments and growing in popularity across the country.

What is PRP Hair Loss Treatment?

PRP Hair Loss Treatment has been practised since the 1980’s. It is a non-surgical procedure, whereby the patient’s blood is drawn, processed and reinjected into the scalp. PRP Hair Loss Treatment takes three steps.

Step 1 – The patient’s blood is drawn (usually from an arm) and processed in a centrifuge. This is a machine that spins the blood at very high speeds, causing it to separate into its component parts.

Step 2 – The centrifuge takes about 10 minutes to separate blood into three parts:

  • Platelet Rich Plasma
  • Platelet Poor Plasma
  • Red Blood Cells.

Step 3 – We inject Platelet Rich Plasma into your scalp in the areas that need help with growth.

What is PRP?

PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma. This is a part of your blood which it is possible to isolate and use in treatments. All blood contains certain proteins. PRP is a part of your blood that is particularly rich in plasma proteins.

How does it work?

PRP treatment is used in variety of procedures, that share certain similarities. Fundamentally, PRP is injected into the skin to help damaged tissue heal, by stimulating your body to grow new tissue.

Platelets help your blood to clot. When platelet rich plasma is injected into an area, research suggests it can help stimulate that area to concentrate growth and healing by the release of the concentrated growth factors inside the platelets. PRP injection can also stimulate blood flow and reduce inflammation.

PRP is not just used in treating hair loss. It is also used to help treat:

  • Tendon injuries
  • Muscle injuries
  • Ligament injuries
  • Osteo-arthritis

How effective is PRP Hair Loss Treatment?

There have been several studies into using PRP injections to treat hair loss. While the scientific method suggests that more studies should always be done, the evidence so far is promising.

A 2014 study suggested that a regular course of injecting PRP into the scalp did seem to produce a growth in the number of active follicles in the scalps of those participating. The average number of follicles increased from 71 to 93 over a period of three months.

A 2019 study compared using PRP treatment and over the counter treatment (Rogaine) to address hair loss. It found over 6 months that those in the study who received PRP treatment as opposed to Rogaine has significantly better growth and thickness of hair.

How long does it take?

PRP Hair Loss Treatment is not an immediate process. Before we start the procedure, we generally have a consultation with you. We want you to know that you are choosing the right procedure for you, and that you are comfortable with what we will be doing.

The procedure itself does not take long – usually between about 30 minutes and 1 hour. For the best results, we recommend having 3 treatments, each around 4-6 weeks apart. This gives the Platelet Rich Plasma time to start work in between each treatment session. Visible results depend on the individual. Some people start to see results after only a few weeks. Other people might take a few months. Generally, you should have seen visible results by 12 weeks after the start of the programme.

Are there any potential side effects?

All procedures carry some potential side effects. However, PRP Hair Loss Treatment is a low-risk process. Initially, you are quite likely to feel some redness and swelling around the site of the injections. However, this is very likely to pass after a few hours.

How much does PRP Hair Loss Treatment cost?

PRP Hair Loss Treatment is different for everyone who needs it. We start at £599 per session, however we recommend 3 sessions of treatment to get the best results for the reduced price of £1,500. It does depend on the individual how many sessions they want to have or need to have to see the best results. If you have suffered greater hair loss, you may need more sessions. Equally, if you have only recently started to notice hair thinning, then fewer sessions might be enough for you.
